If paying at least $50 for an original Aerolux flower light bulb is too much for your budget, there are a few companies making affordable artistic flower light bulbs today – see examples here – but they don’t even come close to these vintage wanders that most people don’t even know ever existed.Logic PRO E-Cigarette Refill Capsules Strawberry 6mgįor use with the Logic PRO E-Cigarette, the Logic PRO E-Cigarette Refill Capsules Strawberry 6mg are packed with the fruity flavour of fresh strawberries. These days, vintage Aerolux flower light bulbs are sometimes auctioned off on sites like eBay, for anywhere between $50 and $200, depending on the condition and workmanship of the filament. They consumed about 3-5 watts of power, and had a high yield of light produced versus electricity consumed.īelieve it or not, during the 1940s, one of these little wonders would sell for only ¢20, which is kind of mind-blowing, considering the painstaking work that obviously went into making them. The green color (as was used for grass, accents in advertising bulbs or leaves in the flower and bouquet bulbs) was produced by coating the metal with barium, which responded to the wavelength of light given off by the ionized gas.”īecause the phosphors used in Aerolux bulbs were somewhat brittle, they had to be handled with care. Shaking or jarring the bulbs could cause flaking and the migration of the phosphors to other parts of the sculpture or to the inner glass of the bulb. Jonas Clark-Elliott adds that “The red bulbs are filled with neon gas, the pink bulbs with a neon-argon mix, and the purple/violet bulbs with argon gas. Because glow discharge occurs readily at 110-120 volts AC, one could use these bulbs in standard household lamps in the United States.” ![]() These phosphors fluoresced when excited by glow discharge. ![]() Also within the bulb were metal sculptures coated with phosphors. They were really popular back in the day, and looking at the photos below, it’s easy to see why.Īccording to Wikipedia, “ Aerolux gas discharge light bulbs contained low pressure gas, either neon or argon, or a mixture of the two. They not only had these intricate metallic flower sculptures for filaments, but they would also shine in various colors depending on the gases and coatings used. But their most impressive and popular creations were the flower light bulbs. But there was once a company that produced the most amazing flower light bulbs, and luckily some of its creations are still around today.Īerolux Lighting Corporation was an artistic light bulb manufacturer that operated from the 1930s through the 1970s. The company made beautiful gas-discharge light-bulbs in various shapes, from cartoon characters and animals, to religious symbols and popular emblems. They play a very important role in our lives, but when it comes to aesthetics, most of them are nothing special. Most of us don’t pay much attention to light bulbs.

Only a creek - no fence - divides Peake Ranch from the Alma Rosa property, Anderson said.Īlma Rosa’s vineyards line the hills that lie parallel to Peake. When he sold his namesake winery to the Terlato Wine Group in 2005, Sanford retained El Jabali vineyard for Alma Rosa Winery. Peake Ranch Vineyard encompasses 48 acres of vines on 105 acres - part of the 1,600-acre parcel first owned by the artist Channing Peake (hence the name), and then, in part, by industry pioneer Richard Sanford, who purchased 400 acres.Ĭhanning Peake, who died in 1989 at age 79, married Catherine “Katy” Schott in 1938, a union with a prominent family that afforded him the financial freedom to pursue his art.Īn accomplished horsewoman with a passion for ranch life, Schott used part of her inheritance to buy 1,600 acres in Buellton where she and her husband established Rancho Jabili, Spanish for “wild boar.”ĭecades later, Sanford would christen the acreage fronting Santa Rosa Road as “El Jabali” in a nod to the site’s ranching history. Today, that site is the popular John Sebastiano Vineyard, a source for Peake Ranch and many other winemakers. He earned both bachelor and master’s degrees in physics at UCLA and works in the financial sector.įollowing their Sierra Madre investment, the Wagners partnered with friend Sebastian Sterpa to plant grapes on the hillsides of Sterpa’s cattle ranch along West Highway 246. John Wagner grew up in Ventura County, where - like Anderson - he was an early student of agriculture while laboring in his family’s avocado and lemon orchards. While Gallo purchased Sierra Madre from founder and longtime strawberry famer Doug Circle in 2018, the Wagners partnered into the site as well. ![]() On the road to Peake Ranch’s tasting room is the property’s historic adobe, prominently featured in the 2004 film Sideways. Clearly, doing so is more expensive than just buying a pack of lined paper, but in a pinch, this is a useful tool. One odd feature we noticed-and were endlessly amused by-is the ability to print so-called school documents: lined paper (both college rule and wide rule), graph paper, and a task list. This tool is especially handy if you have a lot of photos on a card and don't want to click through them one by one. It allows you to print the contents of a card, bubble in the ones you want printed (as well as designate number of prints and type of paper), and scan the sheets to print only the images you designate. This feature is common on Canon's photo-centric printers (such as the MP450). ![]() What you can't do is print the contents of a media card as a photo index sheet. Additionally, when previewing the contents of a memory card, you can zoom in on a picture or zoom out to view multiple pictures at once. If you turn Photo Fix on, it will automatically optimize photos by reducing red-eye and enhancing lighting, contrast, and sharpness. The Photo Fix button lets you toggle between on and off. The dedicated Photosmart Express button lets you view and print photos from a media card, reprint photos by scanning them, save photos from a media card to your PC, and share the photos over a network connection. Printing from a memory card presents the most options. When scanning photos, you can do all of the above, as well as save it to a memory card or reprint the photo. When scanning a document, you can open the scan in a number of HP utilities including the HP Document Viewer or Photosmart Express, as well as save it as a file, attach it to an e-mail, or open it in a program such as Paint. The scan menu differentiates between scanning documents and photos. The printer lacks a rear output for straight pass-through-a convenient feature if you do a lot of printing on heavy paper such as cardstock. The output tray sits above the input tray and features an extender that corrals long pages. While it's nice to be able to have both plain and photo paper loaded and ready at all times, a secondary input tray would go a long way to reduce the hassle of removing the plain paper when you want to print on a different type of paper such as cardstock, transparencies, or larger-size photo paper. Both input trays pull out partially for easy paper loading. Just above the main paper tray sits a smaller tray specifically for 4圆 photo paper. The input tray can hold paper as large as legal size and can fit about 100 sheets of plain paper. A single tray in the front handles both input and output. The vast majority of photo printers in this price range include the port (such as the Canon Pixma MP500), as do some office-oriented single-function printers such as HP's own Deskjet 6940.Īnother drawback is the Photosmart C5180's limited paper handling options. Noticeably absent from this photo-centric printer is a PictBridge port for direct printing from a digital camera. Four media card slots accept most major types of media cards, though you'll need adapters for some of them. The scanner lid tends to drop back down unless you push it all the way open, and its hinges don't lift to accommodate thick books or documents. The scanner accepts original documents to as large as A4 size. Its glossy white-and-light-gray body measures 17.6 inches wide, 15.2 inches deep, and 7.4 inches tall, and weighs only 21 pounds. The HP Photosmart C5180 is reasonably compact for a photo all-in-one with a flatbed scanner. Still, for about the same price, the Canon MP500 provides more features, faster speeds, and better print quality. The $199 printer also has limited paper handling options and no fax function, but its overall print quality will satisfy anyone who wants to print snapshots. Its one major fault is the lack of a PictBridge port for printing directly from a digital camera-a must for any photo-oriented home printer. A reasonably priced, home hobbyist multifunction printer, the HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One performs well and is fast enough for basic printer needs. ![]() Both were very good!
